Senegal radio to sue police over reporter beating

A Senegalese radio station plans to sue the police over the alleged beating of its top sports reporter, its manager said on Monday.
Radio RFM, owned by pop star Youssou N'Dour, said sports editor Boubacar Kambel Dieng was beaten on Saturday by at least a dozen police officers while trying to interview Senegalese soccer players after a game against Liberia.

African Union joins chorus of concern on Zimbabwe

The African Union on Monday joined a chorus of international concern and dismay over the withdrawal of Zimbabwe's opposition from a presidential run-off because of severe pre-election violence.
Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Sunday pulled out of the June 27 poll, saying supporters of his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) would risk their lives by voting because of brutal attacks by supporters of President Robert Mugabe.

Guinea troops clash with police

Fighting has broken out in the West African state of Guinea between soldiers and striking police officers.
The two sides exchanged gunfire at the headquarters of a riot police unit in the capital, Conakry.
Some police officers have been on strike over pay and conditions since Monday, and held the head of the police force hostage for several hours

MDC will never rule Zimbabwe

Robert Mugabe has vowed that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change will "never rule Zimbabwe" in a weekend speech that -followed a pledge to arm war veterans and send them to fight in the event of an MDC victory.

The Zimbabwean president's most threatening speech yet came at the funeral of an army general just as Morgan Tsvangirai, the MDC leader and his rival in the June 27 run-off, was detained at a roadblock for several hours, and Tendai Biti, party secretary-general, was brought to court to determine whether his arrest last week on treason charges was lawful.

Matam women made a rally against violence

Women in the Matam region of senegal organized a rally on Thursday to protest against the violence they suffer.
Considered as vulnerable,the women in the Matam region have invested yesterday the streets of the regional capital to express their indignation that women's rights are often violated. 'We are tired of suffering the law of the strongest', launch it. And the latest violence to date, says it dates back to last weekend where the young Haby Bâ was raped by an unidentified individual in the vicinity of the village of Tiguéré Yééné, located a few dozen kilometres from the town of Matam. 'We want the violence to stop', they said.
